There are certain journeys so legendary they become a destination in themselves. While many have their sights set on trekking the Inca Trail, I have to admit, the classic train ride to Machu Picchu has been on my bucket list for the longest time. There’s something impossibly romantic about it. I’m craving the slow travel, the old-world charm of moving through one of the world’s most stunning landscapes by rail. It’s not just a way to get there; it’s an essential part of the entire magical experience, and I can’t wait to do it myself.

1.0 The Scenery: A Moving Panorama

More than anything, it’s the views from the window that I’m desperate to see. This isn’t just any train ride; it’s a journey through wildly changing ecosystems. I imagine setting off from the high Andes, watching the landscape transform from arid, golden plains into the lush, green splendor of the Sacred Valley.

The train tracks famously follow the path of the thundering Urubamba River, and I’d plan to get a seat where I can watch the water rushing over the rocks below. The best part, I think, would be the final leg of the journey, where the valley narrows and the vegetation becomes denser, turning into a vibrant, thriving cloud forest. To be gliding through such a dramatic and remote landscape, with towering green mountains on either side, must feel completely surreal. It’s the ultimate way to build anticipation for what lies ahead.

2.0 Choosing Your Carriage: The Ride of a Lifetime

Deciding on the train itself feels like a key part of the plan. There are two main companies, and both offer different levels of comfort and style. Honestly, I’d be excited to take any of them, but I’ve definitely been eyeing up the options.

2.1 PeruRail: The Classic Operator

PeruRail is the long-standing, iconic choice, and they have a few services that are calling my name.

2.2 Inca Rail: The Modern Competitor

Inca Rail is the modern alternative, known for its chic and contemporary style. They also have some amazing options that I’d love to try.

3.0 The Route: Planning Your Departure

Where you kick things off is also part of the adventure. While some services leave from Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,399 m) itself (from the Poroy station), I think my perfect plan would involve starting in the Sacred Valley.

My ideal trip would be to spend a couple of days exploring the valley first, staying in the charming town of Ollantaytambo (9,160 ft / 2,792 m). It has its own impressive Inca fortress that I’m desperate to explore. Then, I’d board the train from the station right in town. It breaks up the journey and means you can start the scenic train ride right in the heart of the valley. It feels like the most relaxed and picturesque way to do it.

The train journey ends in Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft / 2,040 m), the small town at the base of Machu Picchu. I imagine stepping off the train and feeling the buzz of excitement. After such a beautiful journey, you’re finally there, just one short bus ride away from the Lost City of the Incas. It’s the perfect end to a perfect ride.
