The Lares Valley trek offers a combination of stunning landscapes, traditional cultures, the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu on the fourth day. The hike will take you through stunning mountain landscapes, over high passes, and you will spend two nights near traditional Peruvian villages.
The Inca Trail is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful trails in America and therefore an unforgettable experience that should not be missed. The trail leads through the protected wilderness of the Peruvian jungle and forest steppe, passing several Inca archaeological sites and offering stunning views. The Incas used this itinerary for the pilgrimage to the sacred citadel Machu Picchu.
This hike will take you to uncrowded trails, where you can meet and interact with members of the Andean communities and explore the Andes in total tranquility. You will learn all about life in these isolated villages, become familiar with their culture and traditions, walk alongside llamas and alpacas, and even visit a local school. We finish your TreXperience, spending an unforgettable day exploring Machu Picchu.
The tour starts when we pick you up from your hotel at 4.30 am by van to the famous thermal medicinal baths of Lares, arriving around 8:00 am. You will have time to jump directly into the medicinal pools with different temperatures good for bones, muscles, stress and relax with the beautiful mountain views. Afterwards, you will have an energizing breakfast prepared by your trekking chef.
We hike 4 hours to the village of Cuncani, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we continue hiking for 3 hours, passing beautiful Andean lakes, waterfalls and incredible views of the mountains until we reach the village of Kiswarani. Upon arrival at our campsite, your tents and a cup of hot tea will be waiting for you.
Get up early and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea before you start packing for the most challenging day of the Lares trek.
After breakfast, you will begin a 4-hour hike uphill to the Condor Pass, the highest point of the route (4700 m / 15354 ft).
On the way, you can admire beautiful lakes where you can see Wallatas, Andean geese, swimming in crystal clear waters.
Upon reaching the summit of the Condor Pass, you will be offered a well-deserved cup of coca tea and can rest while your guide performs a spiritual offering ceremony to the sacred mountains.
Then, you will descend for 2 hours to the valley where lunch will be served.
After lunch, you will continue downhill for 2 more hours until you reach the village of Canchacancha, through breathtaking scenery.
Upon arrival, the tents will be ready and you will be offered a hot drink to enjoy while contemplating the mountains.
You will have time to interact with the locals, walk around the village, observe llamas and alpacas, visit a local school and even practice some English and learn Quechua from them.
Start the day with a beautiful view of the mountains and a delicious breakfast before preparing for the last 4 hours downhill from the highlands to the Sacred Valley.
Say goodbye to the last village on the road, which still preserves Inca traditions and is isolated from modern technologies.
During the hike, observe different ecosystems, from the cooler highlands, where only potatoes are grown, to the fertile soils of the Sacred Valley, where corn is the main product.
The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu ends in the village of Huaran (2700 m / 8856 ft), from where a private bus will take you to Salineras and Ollantaytambo, known as the “Last Living Inca City” or the “Native American Capital of the World”.
Take some time to explore the ancient streets and water canal in use since Inca times in Ollantaytambo.
Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before boarding the 7:00 pm train to Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night in a 3-star hotel.
Enjoy the last day waking up early at your hotel and enjoy a delicious breakfast before taking the first buses to Machu Picchu to witness the spectacular sunrise over the citadel.
Before starting the 2-3 hour guided tour of the citadel, your tour guide will conduct an additional walk.
During the guided tour, the guide will take you to the most important places of Machu Picchu and explain its history, mysteries and the incredible Inca technology used in its construction.
After the visit, you will have free time to explore on your own or do additional treks, such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain; it is important to book in advance.
At the end of your visit to the citadel, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included).
Then, you will board the exclusive Vistadome panoramic trains to return to Ollantaytambo.
From there, your private van will take you back to Cusco.
Delivery to your hotel is scheduled around 7:30 pm.
During the Lares trek, your main luggage will be remembered at your hotel in Cusco, or you can leave with us. For the trek, you will carry your backpack plus a duffel bag that TreXperience will provide you with during the briefing session held the day before your trek at our office in Cusco.
During the briefing that takes place at 6:00 pm, your tour guide will give you the final details of your trip and will give you the duffel bags to store up to 7 kilos of your personal belongings. This bag will be carried by our porter along with food and camping equipment.
The backpack will be with you at all times; you are responsible for carrying it during day hikes, and it should be as light as possible. Remember that duffel bags will be found only at the camp and everything you need during the day should be in your backpack.
