Highlights:
We will wake up early with a cup of coffee or hot coca tea to enjoy the scenery formed by vast plains and snow-capped peaks as we leave the tent. After breakfast, we will begin the ascent to the highest point of our trek, the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). At the top, we will stop to explore and enjoy the breathtaking views, including a beautiful lagoon at the base of the Salkantay mountain. Then, we will descend for three hours to reach the lunch spot at Wayracmachay (3,800 m / 12,467 ft).
After lunch, we will begin our descent from the heights of the mountains into the cloud forest, experiencing one of the most radical changes in temperature and climate. On the way, we will observe a great variety of flora, hummingbirds and orchids until we reach Collpapampa, located at 2,770 meters. Tonight we will stay near a small village.
Day 3 of the Salkantay trek is probably the most scenic. After breakfast, we will head to Lucmabamba (2,000 m / 6,600 ft), a hike of approximately 3 hours. There, you will participate in a cooking demonstration to learn how to prepare the famous Pachamanca, a delicious dish that involves burying vegetables, fruits and meat with hot stones. You will have the opportunity to actively participate in the preparation of this unique delicacy.
After lunch, we will visit an organic coffee farm to learn about the harvesting process and the preparation of coffee. Afterwards, we will drive by transport for an hour to Hidroeléctrica and walk for 3 hours to Aguas Calientes. Arriving around 5 pm, we will have dinner at an outstanding local restaurant and stay in a hotel.
On our last day, you will have to get up very early to prepare for the highlight of the trip: the majestic Machu Picchu. We will head straight to the queue to wait for the first bus to Machu Picchu at 5:30 am. Upon arrival and as the sky clears, we will climb up enjoying the incredible views of the city along the way. On a clear day, you will witness the spectacular sunrise over Machu Picchu, a truly unforgettable moment.
Your guide will accompany you on a full 2 to 3 hour tour of the city before dropping you off at Machu Picchu or allowing you to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (tickets should be booked as far in advance as possible). Your guide will explain how to take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) and then take the train and bus back to Cusco.
– Duration of tour: 2 to 3 hours in Machu Picchu
– Altitude of Machu Picchu: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
