Choquequirao, which means “Cradle of Gold”, is located on the Apurimac River, fed by glaciers, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and perched on a high ridge.
It is a little visited “Lost City of the Incas”, considered the brother of Machu Picchu and three times bigger than the latter.
It was a safe haven for the Incas who resisted the Spanish after the conquest and was finally abandoned and covered by vegetation.
In this unique trek, we will travel along Inca trails, high Andean landscapes with glaciers, descend into deep canyons where condors fly and cross diverse cloud forest ecosystems.
We will also be able to spot native wildlife, such as Andean condors, diverse birds, native flora and fauna, orchids and more.
We are specialists in this area and offer frequent outings with experienced guides.
We are the only company that takes you to the hot springs of CONOC after Choquequirao Trek and explores the unique Inca ruins of Saywite.
This incredible hike also takes us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and 7th New Wonder of the World: Machu Picchu.
Choquequirao, nicknamed the “twin sister of Machu Picchu”, is an incredible citadel built by the Incas on top of an impossible mountain, overlooking the beautiful landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.
Highlights of the experience include:
Departure from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 am and we will head through the Andes towards Capuliyoc, arriving at approximately 8:30 am. After enjoying the first breakfast prepared by our chef, we will start the TreXperience to one of the legendary lost cities of the Incas: the Inca site of Choquequirao.
The first part of the trek consists of a 4-hour descent from Capuliyoc (9550 ft / 2911 m) to our lunch spot at Chiquiska (1893 m – 6210 ft). On the way, you will enjoy the first views of the Apurimac Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Peru. This stage of the trek offers spectacular panoramas, with landscapes ranging from the Peruvian mountains to the dense vegetation of the cloud forest.
After lunch, we will continue the trek for two more hours to Santa Rosa (2230 mts – 7300 ft), where we will camp for the night.
Our day will begin with a 4-hour hike uphill to reach Marampata, located at an altitude of 9550 feet (2911 m). On this trek, you will have the opportunity to visit sugar cane farms, where the locals produce “Cañazo”, a local alcoholic beverage with a long tradition that has been given to cities like Cusco over the centuries.
After the morning hike, we will stop for a comforting lunch at a local lodge, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and river.
After replenishing our energy with a tasty lunch, we will continue ascending for another 2 hours until we reach Choquequirao, located at an altitude of 3057 m (10029 ft). This spectacular Inca site, located in the Peruvian Andes, was one of the last Inca cities built in the cloud forest. During the conquest of Peru, it may have been one of the entrance controls to Vilcabamba, the last Inca capital in the 16th century.
Today, our camp is located right next to this fascinating archaeological site, giving us the opportunity to explore these mysterious places at our own pace and enjoy the serenity they offer.
Wake up with a cup of coffee or coca tea provided by your trekking team in your tent while enjoying the spectacular sunrise in this magical place. We will start with a 3 hour descent until we reach Santa Rosa (2230 meters – 7300 feet), where we will enjoy our lunch after breakfast.
Afterwards, we will continue descending for 2 more hours and then ascending for 2 hours to reach the last camp at Chiquiska (1800 meters / 5905 feet). This day offers the perfect opportunity to take in the surrounding landscape, replete with hundreds of different flowers, birds and waterfalls in the distance.
On the last day, start early and enjoy the last breakfast with your team.
Then get ready for the last 4-hour hike uphill to Capuliyoc.
We will organize a special feast: a subway Pachamanca barbecue, with a variety of vegetables, meats and fruits cooked underground with hot stones.
After lunch, say goodbye to all our trekking team that accompanied you on this expedition.
Then, take private transportation to the Saywite archaeological site: a large mysterious rock believed to be part of the region’s complex irrigation system.
You will have enough time to explore the area before returning to Cusco.
Arrival at your hotel is scheduled around 6:00 pm.
For the trek from Choquequirao to Machu Picchu, it is important to carry little luggage and only the essentials. Also, remember to bring warm clothes and a raincoat, as the weather in the Andes Mountains can be unpredictable.
