Choquequirao, which means “Cradle of Gold”, is located on the Apurimac River, fed by glaciers, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks and perched on a high ridge.
It is a little visited “Lost City of the Incas”, considered the brother of Machu Picchu and three times bigger than the latter.
It was a safe haven for the Incas who resisted the Spanish after the conquest and was finally abandoned and covered by vegetation.
In this unique trek, we will travel along Inca trails, high Andean landscapes with glaciers, descend into deep canyons where condors fly and cross diverse cloud forest ecosystems.
We will also be able to spot native wildlife, such as Andean condors, diverse birds, native flora and fauna, orchids and more.
We are specialists in this area and offer frequent outings with experienced guides.
We are the only company that takes you to the hot springs of CONOC after Choquequirao Trek and explores the unique Inca ruins of Saywite.
This incredible hike also takes us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and 7th New Wonder of the World: Machu Picchu.
The exciting adventure begins at 5:00 a.m. when your guide picks you up at your hotel and you travel for the next 4 hours in our private van to Capuliyoc (2850 m / 9407 ft).
Along the way, you can enjoy picturesque views of villages, spectacular valleys and snow-capped mountains.
Once in Capuliyoc, we meet our riders and prepare all our equipment on the horses. You will only carry a small backpack with the essentials you will need on the way.
From here we can enjoy the spectacular view of the Inca ruins of Choquequirao, the Apurimac Canyon and the impressive snow-capped mountains such as Padreyoc (5,571 m / 18,387 feet).
Then, we will descend for 3 hours until we reach Chikisca for lunch.
After lunch, we will continue for 2 more hours downhill to our first campsite at Playa Rosalinas (2061 m / 6762 ft).
Hot drinks and snacks will be waiting for you there, and you will have time to settle into your tents, which are already set up, before dinner.
After an early breakfast, we cross the bridge and begin a 4-hour walk until we reach Marampata, where we will stop for lunch and enjoy the view of the Inca ruins of Choquequirao. After this break, we continued our hike to the camp for our second night, located just 20 minutes from the ruins. Being so close to the archaeological site, we have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the ruins late into the night and watch the condors fly with the canyon winds.
After breakfast, we will visit the magnificent archaeological site of Choquequirao all day. There is so much to see! These ruins are three times larger than Machu Picchu and new sections are constantly being discovered hidden beneath the dense jungle. Enjoy the private guided tour and explore all the beautiful sections of the temples, terraces, palaces, the llama section and much more.
Choquequirao means “Cradle of Gold” in the Quechua language of the Incas, although this is probably not its original name. It is another “Lost City of the Incas” officially rediscovered at the end of the 20th century. It is located high on a ridge, almost 1750 meters above the roaring glacier-fed Apurimac River, and is surrounded by the imposing snow-capped peaks of Salkantay and Humantay. Excavations and restoration of the 1810-hectare site began in the 1990s, and it is estimated that only 30% of the site has been restored to date. Every day archaeologists discover new things.
After our exhaustive explorations, we will return to the same camp. Drinks and snacks will be waiting for us and we can relax before dinner. Enjoy your last night next to these magical ruins, under an incredible starry southern sky.
After breakfast, we prepare to return to Cusco. The trip lasts two hours to Marmpata, with views of the Apurimac Canyon. Your guide will point out flora and fauna, and you’ll see waterfalls and rising clouds.
From Marampata, we begin the 4-hour downhill walk to La Playa, with trekking poles. Halfway through, we enjoyed fresh fruits, especially the fruit of the cactus. Then another two hours uphill to Camp Chikiska, where you might see spectacled bears, condors, and hummingbirds.
