The Waqrapukara trek in Acomayo, Cusco, is an out-of-the-ordinary experience that is rapidly gaining popularity among visitors to Peru. This recently discovered archaeological site offers a unique insight into the Inca civilization and provides an authentic experience with the local community that preserves their ancestral traditions.
The name Waqrapukara, which means “horn fortress” in Quechua, is due to its distinctive shape. Located at 4,300 meters above sea level in the province of Acomayo, this complex offers impressive views of the Apurimac River canyon and well-preserved cave paintings along the trail.
The excursion begins with a three-hour drive from Cusco to the Andean village of Wayki, the starting point of the trek. During the 550-meter hike to the Inca fortress, visitors will enjoy the natural beauty of the region and learn about Inca history and culture from specialized guides.
It is important to keep in mind that this trek is done at high altitude, so it is recommended that visitors spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.
Our guides are not only trained in the history and archaeology of the complex, but are also trained in first aid to ensure the safety of hikers throughout the tour.
We invite you to read our customer reviews on Trip Advisor to learn more about this exciting experience and look forward to welcoming you on this unique Waqrapukara adventure!
