the Inca Trail. It’s not just any hike, right? It’s like THE most famous one in all the Americas. People dream about it – all that history, the views that just knock your socks off, and those old ruins you see. It’s definitely a bucket list thing. So, if you’re actually gonna do it, you gotta get ready. Let me share some stuff I learned, hopefully it helps you get prepped for this amazing trip.

First Things First: Plan Like Crazy!

Okay, listen up, this part’s super important. Booking ahead for the Inca Trail? It’s not just a good idea, it’s EVERYTHING. The government here in Peru is pretty strict about it – they want to keep the trail beautiful and protect all the old sites. So, they only let 500 people on the trail each day. That’s it.

To make sure you get a spot, you really, really need to book your trek like, six months before you want to go. No joke. For our trip this July – and it’s June now, so just around the corner! – we actually booked way back last September. And even then, spots were going fast! Everyone wants to do this trail, so those permits are like gold.

That All-Important Permit

Seriously, get that permit sorted out super early. They only give out a few each day, and they disappear fast. Especially if you’re thinking of going between May and September, ’cause that’s peak time. Best bet? Find a good tour company, they can help you wrestle that permit down.

Picking Your Season

When should you go? Well, the dry season, May to September, is awesome ’cause you probably won’t get rained on much. But, yeah, it’s also crazy busy then. If you want fewer people around, maybe think about April or October. Just a thought.

Getting Your Body Ready

Fitness – Don’t Skimp on This!

Let’s be real, the Inca Trail is tough. It’s not a walk in the park. So, you need to get your body moving beforehand. Cardio, some strength stuff – anything to build up your stamina so you don’t conk out. Hiking is great practice, obviously. And hitting the stairs or doing leg workouts will thank you later, trust me.

Altitude – It’s a Real Thing

And then there’s the altitude. It’s no joke up here. Cusco, where you start, is way up over 11,000 feet (that’s 3,400 meters). So, please, please spend a few days in Cusco just chilling and letting your body get used to it before you even think about starting the trek. It makes a huge difference.

What to Stuff in Your Backpack

Clothes: Think Layers, People!

Layers, layers, layers. That’s the name of the game for clothes. Get some of those base layers that pull sweat away, something warm for the middle, and definitely a good waterproof jacket that still lets you breathe. And good hiking boots? Non-negotiable. Plus, comfy socks. Lots of ’em.

Gear Up!

You’ll need a decent backpack, for sure. Trekking poles can be lifesavers on those ups and downs. Sleeping bag, yup. Headlamp? Oh yeah, essential for fumbling around in the dark. And a power bank for your phone or camera is pretty handy to have.

Don’t Forget Your Meds!

Pack any meds you might need. Stuff for altitude sickness, headaches, maybe an upset tummy. And of course, anything personal you’re prescribed. Better to have it and not need it, right?

Papers, Please!

Super important: your passport and that Inca Trail permit. Keep a copy of your passport too, just in case. They check these things along the trail, so have ’em handy. You can find more detailed packing lists online if you want to triple-check everything.
