Exploring Cusco’s Impressive Cathedrals

Peru is a country with strong Catholic roots, and because of that, it has some truly stunning cathedrals across South America. Many of these grand buildings were put up right after the Spanish arrived centuries ago, showing off both old European charm and local building touches.

The city of Cusco is no different. Like other places in Peru, Cusco has some really beautiful churches you should definitely try to see when you have some free time. The good news is, you don’t have to go far to find some of the most important ones. Two of the great cathedrals are located right by the Plaza de Armas (which sits at the city’s altitude, about 3,400 meters / 11,152 feet above sea level), making them just a short walk from the city center.

One church you’ll likely want to visit first is the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. Many people just call it “THE” cathedral of Cusco (located right on or very near the Plaza de Armas, around 3,400 meters / 11,152 feet). It’s the oldest cathedral in the city, with construction starting way back in 1560. The builders did a cool job mixing that Old World style with local materials from the New World, creating a really impressive front to the building. Inside, it’s full of detailed gold work and great craftsmanship, making it one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Peru. It’s definitely worth putting on your list.

If you’re enjoying checking out old churches, think about visiting the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús (also right on the Plaza de Armas, around 3,400 meters / 11,152 feet). This beautiful church was actually built because the Jesuits wanted to rival and even be more beautiful than the Santo Domingo Cathedral. People still debate if it succeeded, but you can easily see for yourself! Why? Because these two big, impressive cathedrals are located side-by-side right there overlooking the Plaza de Armas. When you’re exploring the city center, make sure to stop by and compare the two churches.
